  • Requirements

Worldwide Intranet with social web functionalities

In both their personal and their professional lives, the way people interact with each other has changed. That means that demands on internal Intranets have also changed. The days of simple communication via one-way push messages are long gone. Nowadays, the focus is on encouraging an active, open and straightforward exchange between employees, similar to the social web. The development of Telekom’s “YOU AND ME” Intranet involved creating a central hub where employee-generated content and opinions are taken into consideration just as much as editorial information. The aim was to provide different content in a personalised and user-friendly format, depending on user behaviour and interests. And what is more, the new Intranet needed to be available to all employees worldwide in over 50 countries. In addition to divisional and hierarchical boundaries, the new system also had to overcome national boundaries and ensure a new form of open exchange was established throughout the entire company.

  • Solution

Interactive dialogue platform with individual homepage

Thanks to the “YOU AND ME” social collaboration platform, 120,000 employees in the Deutsche Telekom Group are now connected to each other around the world. This makes the Jive-based platform one of the largest corporate networks in the world, with 800,000 visits monthly. “YOU AND ME” takes company-wide communication and collaboration to a new, interactive level. Within the network, there are over 17,000 groups in which employees share information and ideas, sometimes publicly and sometimes internally within teams in closed groups. Since the launch of “YOU AND ME”, the platform recorded more than 50,000 discussions in 15 months, with the most hotly debated topics prompting over 1,800 comments. And “YOU AND ME” is becoming even more widely accepted, with over 100,000 users to date.
The homepage displays content that is both important for the company and also has personal relevance for individual users. The content on the homepage is no longer decided just by the Intranet editorial team – employees’ interests and user behaviour also determine what content is prominently placed. An algorithm developed specifically for this purpose ensures that each employee is shown his or her own personalised homepage in the virtual Group ecosystem.
In line with the principle of “everyone is an author”, managers now receive direct feedback from employees. Management information is also communicated directly to the workforce. An example of this is the “Tim’s Base” blog by CEO Timotheus Höttges, which is already followed by over 10,000 employees.

  • Benefits

    Open exchange boosts employee motivation

With “YOU AND ME”, the Deutsche Telekom Group now has a new, digital form of employee communication that is direct, fast and authentic. The sharing of knowledge and exchange of opinions serve as a connective element. Thanks to wiki entries, blogs and editorial content, all employees can stay updated on the topics that are important to them within the company and can actively take part in discussions. At the same time, employees gain new insights and facts that help them work more efficiently. Communication via social media functions also enables more efficient collaboration. Direct interaction saves time and money as coordination is speeded up and stakeholders can discuss ideas and turn them into viable business propositions without unnecessary delays. Problems can also be solved easily and quickly using collective intelligence. And the more employees use the platform, the higher its acceptance and intensity of use – including among managers. Decision-makers benefit from employees’ opinions and direct, genuine feedback. They also obtain valuable input on projects and business processes. “YOU AND ME” thus has a direct impact on the motivation and commitment of all employees.
The new social collaboration platform “you and me” ultimately creates the conditions for a cultural shift towards becoming an agile company that is actively shaping the path to digitisation.

  • Tim Höttges, CEO of Deutsche Telekom AG

“Our new, interactive Intranet is more than just a piece of technology: ‘YOU AND ME’ is a collaborative platform. It is based on the concept of everyone contributing to it, which means everyone derives benefits from it. This enables us to break down silos and work better together, across all divisional and national boundaries.”
