Deutsche Energie-Agentur (German Energy Agency)

Clear Identification of All Components in the Digital Energy System

The German Energy Agency dena sees itself as a competence centre for energy efficiency, renewable energies and intelligent energy systems. Since its foundation in 2000, dena has been contributing as an “Agency for Applied Energy Transition” to the achievement of the Federal Government’s energy and climate policy objectives. The shareholders are the Federal Republic of Germany and the KfW-Bankengruppe. At national and international level, dena has already launched more than 1,500 projects. However, there was a lack of digital services for the digitalization of the energy industry, such as smart metering for an intelligent electricity grid. A service should be created that is interoperable, includes the Smart Meter Gateway and covers all installations in the energy system. This requires a comprehensive identity register. Together with 20 other partners, T-Systems MMS has created a blockchain-based infrastructure for dena under the umbrella of the “Future Energy Lab” pilot laboratory for the identification of all plants in the energy system.

Benefit for our Customer

Connection and coordination of all interfaces in the energy system

Integration and Identification of Decentralized Generation Plants and Consumption Units

Highly scalable infrastructure in the Open Telekom Cloud

Low transaction costs, digital-supported market participation without media dislodges

Sara Mamel, Senior Expert Digitization dena

„We want to create a market-oriented basis for a decentralized, digital and intelligent energy system with digital applications such as the identity register. In collaboration with all partners, the ’Blockchain Machine Identity Ledger' has created an infrastructure with connection to the Open Telekom Cloud that meets our vision.“

Automated Device Management in the Digital Energy System

With the rollout of smart metering, the Federal Government has laid the foundation for an intelligent, data-driven energy system. All decentralised energy systems in consumption and generation are digitally recorded – but so far there was no service that reliably records and connects all components, with low transaction costs and no media disruption.
Since personal data can also be processed during smart metering, the GDPR-compliant handling of data from the communication unit, the Smart Meter Gateway, is mandatory. To record the components, each device should first be given a distinctive identity, which should be mapped in a blockchain-based register. For this, the necessary IT infrastructure had to be created in the Open Telekom Cloud.

Blockchain Machine Identity Ledger as Identity Registry for Power Plants

The Blockchain Machine Identity Ledger (BMIL) serves as a digital registry for device identities. It gives each component a unique identity and forms the interface between all participants in the energy system.
T-Systems MMS is helping to set up the register by implementing the Spherity Identity and Stax software solutions. The Open Telekom Cloud hosts the deployed software solutions.

About DENA

The Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) is a German-owned company which - according to the social contract - provides national and international services in order to shape and utilize the energy and climate policy objectives of the energy transition. dena sees itself as an independent driver and pioneer of the energy transition. With studies, pilot projects, platforms and initiatives, it provides impetus, develops standards and, as a think tank, promotes the development towards a sustainable energy system. dena was founded in 2000 on the initiative of the Red-Green Federal Government as a private limited company and employs around 280 people.
